Blues Clubs Closing

It seems that less & less people come out to support live music. This effects clubs and the bands who play live. Let's get a good lively exchange going.

So, what can we do to get people out?

As a blues vocalist, a booking agent, and a contributing writer for Blues Revue magazine, here's my 2 cents:

The blues IS going through a down cycle.  It had a good ride for a while, but it's audience is deteriorating.  This has happened in the history of the blues many times and it will happen again.  Historically, the upswing of the blues comes from two things happening:

1- A new generation discovers the blues.
2- The blues morphs with other styles of music making it more accessible to new age groups.

I was at Black Eyed Sally's - a very popular CT blues club - last weekend, to see Jeff Pritchell.  I was having a conversation with another musician at the bar about the decline of the blues.  A woman in her 40's, eavesdropping from her stool, piped in "The blues is not dead!  We love the blues!"  So I asked her, "How often do you come out to see live blues?"  And she replied, "Three to four times a year." 

Sadly, this is the blues audience now.  Middle aged folks with kids and job and responsibilities who can only get out to see live music a few times a year.  Great fans though they may be, they are not keeping the blues alive.

Only the next generation can will keep the blues alive.  Teach them about the blues greats, give them a deep respect for it's history and allow them to "re-interpret" the blues into something that speaks to their generation. 

In the 60's, British rock bands rediscovered the blues and a new audience was born.... in the 80's even heavy metal bands covered old blues tunes and turned a few guitarists ears to the old sound... and more recently young pop singers like John Mayer have attempted to educate their audiences in new views on old blues. 

Instead of being bitter about it getting "watered down", be grateful it's still kicking -- and encourage the Y Generation to dive in a see what they can make of it.

Lori .... yes, you are correct that the torch needs to be passed (notice how I did not say we are old, lol).

Other factors are technology and the fact there are more choices. HD TV, Video games, the internet, big budget movies, etc,. Then factor in the DUI laws, $3 per-gallon-gas and more reasons to stay home. Oh, and yes ... many of us are also older and just can't do it all anymore. (damn, I said it ... lol)

I may make a post on amateur/professional musicians, declining pay-for-play ... I think I'll spin off a new thread.

I just heard that the Indulge will be closing for renovations. Will the
Thursday night jam end or will it move else where?

The Macungie jam is also in jeopardy.  I hope they don't stop
that one, it's been going on for such a long time.

Hi Fred ...

Yes, I also heard about Indulge. Word on the street is it is going to become a Sports Bar. My understanding is the jam will stop during renovations but if the jam will re-start is any one's guess. As for Macungie, it is also on shakey ground but so far we are holding on.

The bottom line is "Money" ... the venue's need to generate revenue and these days with less people going out it's hard to stay in business. If people want to keep these venue's open it is simple ... come out and drop a few dollars when you can as often as you can.

It's the same issue with our LVBN, Sunday jam. They have to pay a bartender, cook and people to clean up the place so it's important that people come out and support all these events. I know it's tough times for everyone but every little bit helps.

Indulge is closing down in February for renovations, this is true... and yes, a sports bar is planned.  As of now however, they fully intended to keep the Thursday jam.  It's really the only thing thats staying the same. 

If The Pub on Main stops doing a Tuesday Jam, I may know another place not far from there that might like to take it on.  Let me know and I'll see what I can do.

I'm NOT suggesting for a moment that I have "the answer", but I do suggest that we have to start thinking outside the "box"......... that "box" being the Lehigh Valley.  I just did a short stint in Hanover which is in south central PA.  Hanover is a very blue collar town that is really feeling the pain of the early recession we are in.  There is a club there called Kclingers that has blues every Weds night and the place is packed!!  I made friends who are active in the Baltimore blues scene & they tell me the same thing with most of the clubs down there.  I became involved with the Blues Society of Central PA and they have a very active and vibrant organization.... the LVBN should take some lessons from them!!!!  The events they sponsor always seem to be well attended by an enthisiastic audience. 

We really need to take a look at them & see what they are doing different.   One thing I did notice is something that Lori mentioned and that is cultivating a new generation.  I KNOW that's NOT the ONLY answer, but it is one thing they seem to do a better job at than we are doing. 

There are other things that they are doing and we do need to find out what they are.  Doing some research, and reaching out to them would be a good place to start.

I became involved with the Blues Society of Central PA and they have a very active and vibrant organization.... the LVBN should take some lessons from them!!!!  The events they sponsor always seem to be well attended by an enthisiastic audience. 

Not to bite the hand that feeds us... as we are VERY grateful for the LVBN and their support of us at this year's IBC... but I'm just back from Memphis and I have to say the Central PA folks and the Billtown folks were VERY visible at this year's IBC.  We had a great contingency of Sarah Ayers fans from the Lehigh Valley -- but I was really surprised and shocked by the full page ads each chapter took out in the IBC program supporting their performers and  by the large fan base from our sister clubs from PA. 

And to speak to the importance of the new generation of blues players:  Two of the winning groups at this years event -- the band winners (Trampled Under Foot) and the second place solo/duo (Ben Prestage) -- were YOUNG.   Clearly, the new generation is an important and viable part of the future of the blues.

Thanks Lori.  The support that they get from their members is remarkable.  And, as you pointed out, they are very actively cultivating their younger, and less experienced players.  As I said, we need to look closely at how they do things & maybe we can bring that level of participation back to our group.
